Same planets, different grid
Human Design maps planetary longitudes onto the I Ching wheel: 64 hexagrams, each spanning 5°37'30" of the ecliptic. Astrology maps the same longitudes onto 12 signs of 30°. So a Sun at 12° Leo is simultaneously 'Sun in Leo' and a specific gate and line - two readings of one number.
Which system to choose

Is Human Design astrology?
Not exactly. It uses astronomical positions as input but interprets them through the I Ching, the chakra system and Kabbalah, so the vocabulary and conclusions differ.
Why does HD use two charts?
The personality chart is your birth moment; the design chart is when the Sun was 88° earlier along the ecliptic (roughly 88 days before birth). The second describes the unconscious side.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes, for both. A few minutes can change your HD authority and your astrological Ascendant.
Can the two contradict each other?
They can sound different, but they are not mutually exclusive - they are different languages describing the same astronomical data.
