The Chinese zodiac, also called Shēng Xiào, is a system of 12 animal archetypes, each ruling a whole year in a 60-year cycle. Here it is not the date but the year of birth that determines your animal.

Each animal is paired with one of the five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — which nuances its character. So a Wood Tiger behaves very differently from a Metal Tiger.

The Chinese tradition looks at the animal not only for personality but also for compatibility, career, luck in a given year and the path of the soul.

The five elements (Wu Xing)

  • 🌳 Woodgrowth, novelty, flexibility, creativity.
  • 🔥 Firepassion, leadership, charisma, expression.
  • ⛰ Earthstability, care, reliability, balance.
  • ⚙ Metalprecision, discipline, ambition, purity.
  • 💧 Waterwisdom, intuition, depth, adaptability.

Yin and Yang

Each animal carries Yang energy (active, bright — Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog) or Yin (receptive, dark — Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig). It describes how your inner energy moves in the world.

Compatibility triads

In Chinese tradition the animals group into four triads in natural harmony:

  • 🐀 🐉 🐒Rat, Dragon, Monkey: visionaries and strategists.
  • 🐂 🐍 🐓Ox, Snake, Rooster: intellectuals and realists.
  • 🐅 🐎 🐕Tiger, Horse, Dog: idealists and protectors.
  • 🐇 🐐 🐖Rabbit, Goat, Pig: diplomats and creators.

Note: the Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20. If you were born in that window, you may belong to the previous year's animal.
